Until now, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) have mostly been used to produce freshwater fish species such as eel, African catfish, tilapia, zander or sturgeon. Now, however, an increasing number of projects for land-based RAS that are designed for marine fish are emerging. For salmon alone, the planned capacity is over half a million tonnes. Investors are fuelling this development, but are their profit expectations actually justified?
Denmark: A new tool to improve fish welfare in RAS installations
A Danish company has developed a system based on analysing data collected from 12 locations on a fish farm to improve water quality and fish welfare while reducing costs. Blue Unit, a company founded by David Owen, a biologist, in 2009, was established to optimise the operations of recirculation aquaculture systems by exploiting the data available from the RAS. A centralised monitoring system collects data on 13 water quality parameters, including pH, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, opacity, and salinity, that are monitored by specially designed sensors and compares the numbers with benchmark values from producers around the world.

An aquaculture farm whether on land or at sea is a rough environment and the equipment used needs to be tough and reliable if the farm is to operate successfully. FIAP’s Profifeed BeltFeeder is a mechanically driven automatic feeder that can be used in the most demanding environments to deliver feed or other inputs, such as medicines or additives, to the water. The material can take any form from dust to large pellets. The feeder is started manually and can be set to run for 4, 12, or 24 hours during which time it will steadily dispense the medium enabling extremely ef- ficient workflows.

A company in Turkey is growing whiteleg shrimp from imported broodstock. The experience and knowledge gained will be used to catalyse the development of a shrimp industry in the country.
Turkish catches of wild shrimp are dominated by deep-water rose shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris). This species accounted for three quarters of the catch of shrimp, prawn and lobster in 2019 or 3,850 tonnes. In addition, the country imported 2,150 tonnes of shrimp in various forms. Shrimp are popular in Turkey which is why it is surprising, that despite an 8,000 km long coastline and a hugely successful aquaculture sector, shrimp farming has never established itself.
