Despite many improvements, regional overfishing, bycatches and discards remain unsolved problems for the global fishing industry. Catch quotas, controls at sea and in ports, area closures and fishing bans do help, but are not satisfactory solutions. It would be preferable if unwanted fish did not get caught in fishing gear in the first place. Innovative technologies are giving hope for new solutions.

FIAP, based in Ursensollen, Bavaria, has been supplying aquaculture equipment to the industry as well as to private customers since it was founded in 1978. Today it has expanded its range to include water gardens and all the accessories and services that go with them.

As the aquaculture industry grows and develops – in 2025 some 57% of the fish for human consumption will come from fish farming up from 50% in 2016 – it will, particularly in parts of Europe, get increasingly complex and sophisticated. Driving this development as well as responding to it will be companies like FIAP that has made a name for itself developing and supplying equipment to the industry. The family-owned company has existed for over 40 years and today is run by two partners representing the second generation of owner-managers.

Marel, a leading producer of sophisticated equipment for the fish processing industry, held its annual demonstration of machinery for whitefish processing at its dedicated demo centre, Progress Point, in Kastrup close to the Copenhagen airport. The event brought together existing and potential customers from all around the world as well as partners, Marel employees, and representatives from the press. The guests were treated to a day of equipment demonstrations and presentations both by Marel employees and external experts about some of the important trends shaping the future development of the industry.

New location offers room to grow

It is 35 years since the Hamburg-based salmon slicer manufacturer Salmco Technik was founded and to celebrate this anniversary the company will be moving into new premises which, after final completion next year, will have more than twice the current area for administration and workshop. The 2,500 m² site offers room for further growth.

New skinners are a hit with processing company

Germans consume some 13.5 kg of fish and seafood per capita, placing them at the lower end of the scale among European countries. While domestic production is some 268,00 tonnes, the country imports some 937,000 tonnes and exports about 587,000 tonnes.

Fish and seafood are consumed in several different form of which conserves are the most popular followed by deep frozen, fresh, and smoked. Within the country consumption varies from 4.2 kg per capita in Baden-Württemberg and Saarland in the south west to 6.1 kg in Bremen.
